Although the Milton Public Library has a long history in the community having been founded in 1855, its Main Library location has moved several times. In 1974, a prize winning new library building opened at 45 Bruce Street. In 2006, a renovated and expanded space opened including a dedicated Children's level and Newspaper Nook reading area.
A plaque at the entrance of the library reads:
The site occupied by this library was for 115 years, from 1857 to 1972, the location of the historic Bruce Street Public School, an attractive building of local stone attended by many generations of Milton Residents.
The bell from the school is featured prominently outside the Main Library. To learn more about the Bruce Street Public School, explore images and historical records at OurOntario.ca.
